Another regular subject for me is bicycles and public transportation. Here are four more bicycle photos seen around town.
A couple walking home together. He’s using a Bikeshare bike, which is a pretty positive commentary on their adoption by more than just tourists.
A pair of interesting old bikes locked up on the rack outside the National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum.
I’m on the fence about how much I really like this image, but it’s bikes, so I’m including it for now. Let me know what you think – does the composition work well? Placement of depth-of-field?
Finally, the bike in the Hermes window. While it’s not in use for its intended purpose, it’s a nice looking bike, and it’s in the Hermes store window, very cleverly employed in the window design. I forget if it was red or dark blue (I think red), but it was a splash of color that popped out against the white backdrop of the window, pulling your eye around the display.
For rather obvious reasons, most of these are of the bikeshare here in Washington DC. I will be shooting more in other cities where I find them – I’m going to try New York the next time I’m up there, as the CitiBikes are everywhere in Manhattan. I do have token representation from Paris, though. I shot these with a range of cameras, from my Rollei to a loaner Fuji GSW 690 II, to my RB-67. Each has their merits and the different formats I think actually work together to convey the varied moods and perspectives of the bikeshare experience.
Two photos showing different perspectives on the Capital Bikeshare bikes. Shot with my Rolleiflex 2.8E on Kodak Tri-X, developed in Pyrocat HD. I had previously experimented with Rodinal as a developer for Tri-X trying to bring out the grain Tri-X is famous for. I don’t know if there was something I did wrong, or if my developer was old and no longer at full strength (Rodinal allegedly lasts forever, but mine was oh, a good eight years old, and the negs came out kinda flat). I ordered some new Rodinal to replace it to try at higher concentrations to see if I can get the look I was after. It’s nice to see though that if I switch to my tried and true Pyrocat, I can get negs that are as grainless as I want them to be on Tri-X.
